North America is facing a critical shortage of skilled workers, which, according to some experts, could grow to one million by 2020 (as per goingglobal.com).       The level of education required for employment depends greatly on the specific industry, but a post secondary education is almost always required.        Many successful business candidates need to have completed postgraduate work.        University graduates have an employment rate that is less than half of that for high school drop outs.        Higher levels of education generally mean lower unemployment rates.       17% of all adults age 25 to 54 are now participating in formal post secondary education.        Those with a higher level of education enjoy higher starting salaries.       A higher level of education generally results in higher lifetime earnings.       55% of Canadian post secondary students graduate in debt.       On average, students completing a four-year program will have $25,000 in debt, an increase of over 300% over 1990.       Education is a matter of degree.       The type of degree you have influences your employability.       Technology and communication top the list of employability skills.       Over the next five years, occupations that require less than a high school education will account for less than 6% of new job opportunities.        More than 70% of new job opportunities will require at least some post secondary education.        The fastest growing occupations are projected to be in the business and information technology occupations with technical sales, systems analyst and product management leading the way.
